The word “dead” has many different definitions that all mean the same thing: to be deprived or void of life; lacking the power to move, feel, or respond; incapable of being stirred emotionally or intellectually. This week for me, which may fall on a different week for many of you, is something that our society calls “dead week”—which if you are unaware or aren’t a college student, is the week before finals week. And although this week has only just begun today, the stresses of wrapping up my last actual week of school are wearing on me. I have fully embodied all of the definitions of the word “dead”. This is the week in which all big assignments seem to be due, and every class magically has a “test” on some subject or another. I just want to give up. To admit defeat. To lie in my bed all the day long, eating whatever food is within reach and watching a non-stop strand of great Netflix movies.
That’s not how this works though. All of your (or your parents) money, all your hard work and efforts in getting good grades rides on these next two weeks, and you cannot just give up and walk away—however much we all want to, at this time in our academic careers. In fact, you cannot just give up and walk away at any point in your life. Not in your career, or temporary job, not in your academics, not in your relationships, not in your family, not in the pains and trials, not in the successes and great joys. You are not permitted to give up. You are not allowed to walk away. This is your life, no matter what it may consist of. These are the choices you have made and the path you have decided to take, these are your successes and your failures. Your laughter and your tears. So no matter how stressful things get, no matter how dead you feel, you cannot walk away. “Is there any escape?" You might be wondering. The answer is no, there is not an escape from your life. However, you can change the course of your life with just one decision. So there is still hope. For all us college students in Dead Week, as soon as we put down the pencil on our last final, all of this will be worth it. We are just one step closer to graduation. For those of you who aren’t in college, you just have to get past this thing you’re struggling with, then you will be one step closer to what you’re trying to succeed. Don’t give up hope. Romans 12:12 says this, "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” God will never give you more than you can handle. So be patient, my friends, and push through this day, because you never know what awaits at the end of long, hard road. sincerely, t
